The Lyman Ward Rangers were on the short end of a 34-6 score in their season opener against Coosa Valley on Friday.
LWMA was outgained 245-116 in the loss and was penalized 15 times.
“They played like it was the first game,” said head coach Sheldon Ward. “There were just way too many mistakes.”
Coosa Valley’s Philip Neal was too much for LWMA to handle. He opened the game’s scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 8:01 to go in the first quarter.
After a Ranger punt, he tacked on another TD toss with 1:15 to go in the first quarter.
Neal threw another 29-yard strike in the second quarter to set up the Rebels deep in Ranger territory, and a 4-yard run capped the drive with 3:34 to play in the half.
Down 20-0 at the break, things didn’t get much better for LWMA. Neal showed off his legs by running in from 7 yards away with 7:56 remaining in the third quarter to make the count 27-0. Coosa Valley’s last score came on an interception return with 10:38 left in the game.
Lyman Ward’s John Koob scored his team’s only touchdown with 39 seconds left on a 6-yard run. The Rangers hosts Dixie Academy next week.
