CAMP HILL - Coosa Valley Academy's J. B. Ripley, a 6'3" senior center, scored a season-high 33 points - including 11-for-15 from the free throw line - to lead the Rebels to a hard-fought 68 - 61 victory over the homestanding Lyman Ward Military Academy Fighting Rangers on Jan. 13, before a packed house in LWMA's gymnasium.
Senior guard Chris Holcombe added 15 points for the Rebels. LWMA's senior guard Justin Minor led the Rangers with 26 points, including three treys, and had a season-high eight steals. Freshman guard Amory Thompson added 13 points, while freshman point guard Justin Minor had a season-high nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Senior post Kyle Johnson recorded a team-high 12 rebounds.
"We fought hard and came up short again at the end," said Coach Jeff Damron. "Ripley was unbelievable. We couldn't stop him. I'm glad he and Mr. Holcombe are graduating. Their coach said they've been playing together since first grade, and it is obvious.
"Turnovers and missed layups continue to plague us, but we are going to keep on keeping on. Our team chemistry continues to be very good, and we are disappointed, but not discouraged, with this region loss."
The loss evened the Rangers' season record at 5 - 5. Lyman Ward hosts Lighthouse Christian Academy from Montgomery, AL, Friday night at 5:00 p.m. in Camp Hill for a varsity game only.
