Varsity Running Rangers Win Big on the Road, Take a 4 - 2 Record into Holiday Break

GRADY, AL --- Senior Justin Minor, a 5'9" guard from Starkville, MS, scored a season-high 31 points here on Dec. 16 as the Lyman Ward Running Rangers earned a decisive 73 - 46 victory over South Montgomery County Academy (SMCA).  The win gives the varsity team a 4 - 2 record going into the two-week holiday break.

The Varsity Rangers return to action in Camp Hill on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, for a key region contest versus Chambers Academy.  Tipoff time for the varsity game only is at 5:00 p.m. CST.

Minor added seven steals and four assists to his worksheet, while fellow senior Kyle Johnson, a 6-foot post player from Clermont, FL, notched his second consecutive "double-double," pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds and scoring 10 points.  Freshman guard Amory Thompson of Lawrenceville, GA, scored 12 points, and 5'10" senior post Zavious Darling of Covington, GA, added eight rebounds and eight points to the winning cause.  Freshman guard Justin Quinn of Dolomite, AL, scored nine points and gained six rebounds, six steals, and four assists.

"This game was a solid effort by our young team on the road," said Coach Jeff Damron after the game.  "We are progressing well, but we have many challenges ahead of us in the month of January.   We need to continue to improve and make better decisions.  Only two of our current players played here last year.  We are still learning how to play hard, play smart, and play together."

Damron encourages Lyman Ward friends and supporters to attend all home games.  "We are an entertaining team to watch," he says. "Our guys have bought into the team concept. We strive to represent the Academy in an exemplary manner in all that we do."
