Lyman Ward Cadet Wins DAR Good Citizens Scholarship Competition

Cadet Ryan Ferrara of Germantown, TN has been selected as the county DAR Good Citizens Scholarship Competition winner.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution annually sponsor the DAR Good Program and Scholarship Competition.  The student selected as the school's DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of Dependability, which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality; Service, which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others; Leadership, which includes personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility; and Patriotism, which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation, to an outstanding degree.

The competition consists of two parts.  Part I is a series of questions asking the student to describe the qualities of a good citizen: Dependability, Service, Leadership, and Patriotism.  The student must prepare a written description telling why these are important qualities of a Good Citizen and how he has tried to exhibit these qualities in his life and in his relationship with others.  He must submit a resume to include all school activities, offices held, honors and awards, extra curricular activities, jobs and hobbies: a brief description of his future plans, education and career goals; a copy of his scholastic record, and one letter of recommendation.

Part II consists of an essay, administered under the supervision of a faculty or DAR member.  It must be written extemporaneously at one sitting, within a two-hour time limit, and without assistance or any reference material.  Cadet Ferarra was supervised by Mrs. Tamar Reed, LWMA faculty member and DAR Tohopeka Charter, Historian.

Cadet Ferarra competed with seniors from six high schools within the county.  His essay, scholastic record, and personal information is being forwarded to the state level for judging.  His ultimate goal is to be named the National Winner, attend the DAR Continental Congress in Washington, D.C. and be awarded a scholarship and other awards.

The Academy and the DAR Tohopeka Chapter of Tallapoosa County, extend its congratulations to Ryan and wish him will in the state competition.
