Lyman Ward - Affiliates with AISA

CAMP HILL, AL --- Lyman Ward Military Academy has been accepted as a full member of the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) for the 2008 - 2009 academic year.

The AISA Board of Directors voted unanimously to accept LWMA at its March 8 meeting held in Montgomery, AL

The AISA is an association of 60 private, independent schools, all of whom are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  The mission of the AISA is to serve independent schools by providing educational and corporate services and programs focusing onexcellence in academics, arts, and athletics.  It also provides faculty and staff development programs.

"Lyman Ward Military Academy is providing an important service to boys in grades 6 - 12," said Don Oswald, Executive Director of the AISA. "The passion for teaching is obvious from talking with and observing faculty, staff, and students.

Oswald and AISA Athletics Director Roddie Beck conducted a site visit on the Lyman Ward campus on Jan. 15, then presented their recommendation for acceptance to the AISA Board of Directors.

Lyman Ward Academic Dean Jeff Damron believes the move will strengthen the Academy in both academic and athletic arenas.

"LWMA was one of the original members of the AISA when it was founded in 1970," Damron said.  "The Academy later affiliated with the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA), primarily to accommodate our soccer program.

"This is a logical move for our school at this juncture in our history.  The AISA provides a venue for us to compete in a variety of academic programs, such as scholars bowl, science fair, mathematics competition, oratorical contests, and technology fairs.  We will continue to compete statewide in football, basketball, and soccer at both the varsity and junior high levels.  The member schools with whom we affiliate are more similar to us in terms of mission and educational philosophy."
