Eight Junior School Cadets Meet Criteria for Qualification as Pathfinders

CAMP HILL --- Eight Junior School cadets have met seven criteria for qualification as members of Lyman Ward Military Academy's Pathfinder troop, according to Assistant Commandant MAJ (Ret) Michael R. Mason, who sponsors the activity.

The cadets and their grade levels are:  Jerome Collins (8th), Taylor Drouin (6th), Benjamin Greenberg (8th), Steven Lindsay (6th), Raven Pool (8th), Carson Pruett (7th), Kemper Scott (6th), and Hunter Wiggins (8th).

Pathfinder qualification criteria include:

  1. Lyman Ward - the cadet must show that he understands the reason why Dr. Lyman Ward came to Alabama in the late 1800s and established the school.
  2. Find North - the cadet, placed in an unfamiliar situation, must be able to determine the direction of North.
  3. Compass bearing - the cadet must show that he can determine the magnetic bearing of a feature using a compass.
  4. Pace - the cadet must determine the length of his normal walking pace over a known distance, measured with a surveyor's tape.
  5. Remote measurement - the cadet must be able to determine the height of an object without the aid of a measuring device.
  6. Poison ivy - the cadet must be able to identify poison ivy.
  7. Two-mile hike - the cadet must complete a 2-mile hike with his fellow cadets.
