Roy Berwick - Colonel Jenrette

Friday, March 03, 2017

Colonel Albert W. Jenrette passed this last week, 28 February 2017. Notice sent to all trustees, alums, friends, and parents of the Academy.  This fine man was one of the Academy's greats just slightly behind Dr. Lyman Ward, founder and first president, Colonel Wesley P. Smith, fourth and longest serving president.  Colonel Jenrette, a retired U.S. Army officer, served the Academy as Senior Army Instructor, Commandant of Cadets, President, Chancellor, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.  A graduate of The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, and a twenty-six year veteran of the U.S. Army, he served his nation in peace and war:  serving twice in the Republic of South Vietnam in the early years of the war as an Infantry Company Commander and, later, as the Senior Advisor to an ARVN Infantry Regiment.  He will be remembered here, by a great number of faculty, staff, and, of course, cadets as the grand old man of the Academy:  loved, admired, and, now, missed.  It is said he never met a cadet he did not like.  A service is planned for 2:00 pm, Saturday, 11 March 2017, Dixon All Faith Chapel, on the campus of LWMA.  The Academy's flag is at half staff and will remain so until 11 March 2017.  A leader has fallen.    Read More . . .

Roy Berwick - Farewell Colonel Wesley P. Smith

Monday, January 23, 2017

Yesterday in the Dixon All Faith Chapel members of the Smith family, friends, former students, co-workers, trustees, and the Corps of Cadets (-) celebrated the unusual, adventurous, and productive life of Colonel Wesley P. Smith, 4th President of the Academy, and after the founder, Dr. Lyman Ward, the longest serving and most acclaimed of the Academy's 10 presidents.  For example, of the 27 buildings on campus currently Colonel Smith raised all but 4 and one of those, The Dixon All Faith Chapel 2014, replaced an earlier one of the same name that he had raised that had been destroyed by fire. He was a remarkable man by all accounts and the stories told about him and his life were humorous, touching, and poignant -- no dull ones.  His presence is everywhere on campus and he will be remembered, here, for as long as the Academy's doors are open and the Alma Mater is sung.  A man, bigger than life, has passed and for us, here, a hole has opened. Farewell, Colonel Smith, alumnus, teacher, president, chancellor, and mentor to thousands. He is survived by Mrs. Peggy Smith, partner in life for 66 years, Mr. Mike Smith and Mrs. Mike Smith, son and daughter- in- law, three grandchildren, and Margo Timberlake, niece.    Read More . . .
